Healthcare

Having good health brings hope, and with hope, one possesses everything. Since gaining independence, India has made significant progress in the health sector. However, eye-opening data from NFHS highlights persistent challenges in healthcare accessibility. While rural health statistics remain concerning, the health status and access for the impoverished living in urban slums are equally distressing, with less than 4% of government primary healthcare facilities available. Urban slum dwellers face health challenges due to two main factors – lack of education and awareness, and the reluctance to lose a day's wage to reach the nearest medical facility. The urgent need for healthcare among the underprivileged remains unaddressed.

A two-pronged approach is essential: first, to bring quality healthcare services to the doorsteps of the needy, and second, to promote healthcare awareness and contemporary healthcare-seeking behavior among the underprivileged. In this context, a mobile healthcare services delivery system emerges as the most practical solution. Aligning with this perspective, SilverliningTrust has launched the Smile on Wheels program. This unique mobile hospital initiative aims to tackle issues of mobility, accessibility, and availability of primary healthcare, with a special focus on children and women in urban slums and remote rural areas. To date, the Smile on Wheels program has provided free healthcare services to over 10 lakh children and families.
